Les 100 guitares

Several evening-length works have been written by Rhys Chatham for 100 electric guitars, bass and drums, the first of which was entitled AN ANGEL MOVES TOO FAST TO SEE. So far, we've performed it in at l'Aéronef in Lille, the Strasbourg Musica Festival, Montréal Musique Actuelles / New Music America, as well as in other venues in France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, England, Scotland and Portugal. We bring a small team of musicians and technicians from Paris and New York to the host city. The 100 guitarists are recruited locally and are split up into four smaller groups. The 4 guitarists of our ensemble then teach their parts to the local musicians.

100 local musicians meeting and playing together every day for a week! During this week, we become a small community of sorts. There is a real feeling of musical fellowship and camaraderie that develops. In a special modal tuning, the music can be played by serious amateurs. Each of the seven sections of the composition exploits a different playing technique, so the music is a learning experience for everyone.

It has never been a problem in any of the 14 cities we have played in to find electric guitarists. Because we are using local musicians, all their friends come to the performances, so in addition to audiences that would normally come to hear our music, we also have theirs. Our audience attendance averages about 1000 per night (and has been as many as 3000), even in countries where we have no record distribution. The goodwill generated toward the producers as a result of involving the local community in a concert like this has been enormous.
